West Coast Legend “DJ Crazy Toones” has passed
Two weeks into 2017, and we have a death within the hip-hop community. Lamar Dupre Calhoun, better known as Dj Crazy Toones passed away of a heart attack this week on January 9th at the age of 45. He was the dj, producer, and member of WC and The Maad Circle, Ice Cube’s tour dj, and was signed to Ice Cube’s label, Lench Mob Records. Throughout his career, Crazy Toones was an asset to west coast hip-hop in regards to his turntablism and production.
Some of the his notable production was on WC and The Maad Circle’s second album, Curb Servin’ (1995). Crazy Toones produced 10 of the 16 tracks on the album and he produced the hit singles such as The One, and West Up Ft. Ice Cube and Mack 10. Outside of collaborating with his Lench Mob camp, Crazy Toones also worked with other staples in west coast hip-hop such Coolio, Kurupt, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, and Westside Connection. The only solo projects in the Crazy Toones’ catalog are That Nigga’s Crazy : Maad Circle Underground (Part 1) (1996) and CT Experience (2006).
On the day of his death, several figures in hip-hop spoke out on the lost of their beloved comrade. “We have so many memories beyond my career in HIP HOP! Toones and Dub were the 1st to show us The Hood and see what’s really going on in South Central…and they were hanging with us in NY SINCE 1989… From hangin with The Legend DJ Alladin to COOLIO we did mad s***…Just Friend Shit! This is so hard to accept but I have to bcuz we all have a start and an ending in
